Research

My research is in Artificial Intelligence, considering adaptation, interaction and decision-making as fundamental principles of intelligent agents. Thus, my research focuses on machine learning, multiagent systems, and robotics. My research contributions are mainly in the area of Reinforcement Learning, Autonomous Agents, and Transfer Learning. Application domains include for example robot soccer, robot navigation, smart homes, ad networks, computational biology or recommender sysytems. My long-term research intention is to create complete, robust, and autonomous agents that can learn to interact in complex and dynamic environments.

Brief Biography

I am a Full Professor at the Escola Politecnica of the Universidade de Sao Paulo (USP), Brazil. I hold a Ph.D. degree in Electrical Engineering from USP, and M.Sc. and BS degrees in Electrical Engineering from the Centro Universitario FEI (FEI) in Sao Bernardo do Campo, Brazil. In 1985-1988 I was a research scientist at the University of Karlsruhe, Germany, working on computer vision and intelligent mobile robots with Prof. Dr-Ing. Ulrich Rembold at the Institut fuer Prozessrechentechnik und Robotik (IPR), and again in 1991-1992 working at the Forschungszentrum Informatik (FZI) on machine learning and computer vision. In 1998-1999 I was invited as a guest researcher to the Computer Science Department of the Carnegie Mellon University (CS/CMU), where I worked with Manuela Veloso in planning, execution and learning for multi-robot applications. Currently, I am the director of the Laboratorio de Tecnicas Inteligentes (LTI) and head of the Department of Computer Engineering and Digital Systems at Escola Politecnica-USP. Current research interests include machine learning, reinforcement learning, multi-agent systems, transfer learning, and robotics.
