Professor Becerra exalts Poli at Career Fair
Professor Jorge Luis Becerra, from PCS, shared some of experience from the department which he belongs, at the assembly and implementation of the Career Fair, an event that brings together stands of various institutes that are part of the university, where each one showcase their respective undergraduate courses for school students and prospective students of USP. The fair took place on 6, 7 and 8 August, at the Science Technology Park.
About the event, which is on its 9th edition, the professor says: “the students have the experience of the course and others are interested in the course”. Therefore, this interaction that takes place during the fair, in which undergraduate students present the stands to school students, is valuable. In the case of the Polytechnic School, as well as other institutes, a group of students from each departments is chosen by themselves to showcase their courses.
“The candidates start to understand what is being currently offered at the university, what it means to be at the University of São Paulo, what means to be at the Polytechnic School, and which professions are in this university context”, says Becerra, when asked about the main contribution to the candidate students, regarding their expectations about the course and the university in general.
In this context, the professor regrets that few students participate in the fair, as it brings a very enriching contact to both sides. “But that still happens in low scale, a plan to increase the participation of these students would be interesting, so all departments can participate”. He exemplify stating that a previous preparation of those who will participate in the fair is necessary, because there are three days of presentations, plus the organization of each department for its exhibitions.
When asked about the contribution to who organizes and displays the Career Fair, mainly students of the institute, it emphasizes the social relevance of the event. “The great contribution to Poli’s students is this experience that the University can offer, in which the student, when being incorporated into society, have the opportunity to propagate the acquired knowledge”. And in this context, it’s a win-win.
Finally, Becerra discussed some of his involvement setting up the event, which was more connected to the operational part of the department, as it was when executed by other professors on the past. The professor also said that the event advertisement is made through social media, on the institutes and the university chair office. For future editions, the department aims to increase the participation of both students and professors in the organization, because the demand this year was very large and the event is expected to grow along with the curiosity of current and future students of the department.
